Description

‘Burn the Boat’ is a collection of songs that have been written over the past few years by Fini Bearman which interweave influences of jazz, folk and contemporary music. The album is based on themes of summoning courage and making a leap of faith, and it maps a musical journey from the loved to the lost; from moments of sheer joy to those of reflection and musing on life’s fundamental questions.
About the Artist
Fini Bearman is a London based vocalist and composer, performing regularly throughout the UK and across Europe both as a soloist and as a collaborator. Her songs meld influences as diverse as jazz, folk and contemporary music into an arresting and uniquely personal sound, and will take you on a journey from the loved and lost, moments of sheer joy, reflection, to musings on the perennial questions of life. With settings of original text alongside poetry from Langston Hughes, Fernando Pessoa and E. E Cummings, this music is honest yet witty, mixing lush harmony and orchestration with contemporary grooves. Fini is a recipient of awards from the Arts Council England, Jazz Services Rural Touring scheme and the Hampshire Music Foundation, and she has been nominated for several music awards including London Jazz Singer of the year by the Global Music Foundation. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and completed her studies with a Masters in performance and composition from Jazz Institute Berlin.
Fini works in a range of constellations and ensembles, including her own group the Fini Bearman Band which features some of London’s most talented and exciting musicians. She also sings with trombonist and composer Raph Clarkson’s band the Dissolute Society, and co-writes with the award winning pianist and composer Tom Hewson. She is currently working on a new cross-continental ensemble TRANSlate, which is collaboration between London and Berlin based musicians and improvisors.
Fini’s latest album Porgy & Bess was a collaboration with guitarist and electronic musician/composer Matt Calvert, and it received glowing reviews including four stars from Jazzwise; ‘…Reworkings that show such imagination, subtlety and depths of emotion that they immediately take up residence in your heart’, (Peter Quinn). Released on F-IRE Records the cd was named one of the top albums of 2014 by allaboutjazz.com. Her new album Burn The Boat is due to be released in Autumn 2016 on Two Rivers Records, which is a new label ‘committed to releasing experimental, contemporary and improvised music from across Europe’.
As a performer and collaborator Fini’s music has been regularly broadcasted on BBC 2 with Jamie Callum, JazzFM, BBC London, BBC 3, Radio 2, JazzRadio Berlin and resonance FM. She has been lucky enough to perform and work with numerous world class artists including Liam Noble, Guillermo Klein, Norma Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Bobby McFerrin and Ian Shaw.
Fini is also an active and passionate educator and she is a senior lecturer at Leeds College of Music, working with first study composers and vocalists on the BMus degree, as well as delivering specialist seminars and masterclasses in performance, harmony and songwriting.
